We study the expected size of the 2D visibility complex of randomly distributed objects in the plane. We prove that the expected asymptotic number of free bitangents (which correspond to the 0-faces of the visibility complex) among unit discs or polygons of bounded aspect ratio is linear and exhibit bounds in terms of the density of the objects. We also make an experimental assessment of the size of the visibility complex for disjoint random unit discs. We provide experimental estimates of the onset of the linear behavior and of the asymptotic slope and y-intercept of the number of free bitangents in terms of the density of discs. Finally, we analyze the quality of our estimates in terms of the density of discs. On the Expected Size of the 2D Visibility Complex 3

Spatial Resolution Enhancement in a 2D Photonic Crystal Based on Complex Square Lattice

We study the focusing properties of a two dimensional complex square-lattice photonic crystal (PC) comprising air holes immersed in Ge medium. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is utilized to calculate the dispersion band diagram and to simulate the image formation incorporating the perfectly matched layer (PML) boundary condition. In contrast to the common square PCs with the sam...

Analysis of the Effect of Wind Speed and Soil Moisture on Horizontal Visibility Variations Caused by Dust Event in Arid Regions (Study Region: Southeast of Iran)

Introduction: Increasing or reducing the production of suspended particles depends on the important climatic and terrestrial characteristics of a region. One of the most important climatic factors affecting soil erosion is wind speed, so if the surface winds speed in a region exceeds the threshold of erosion, soil susceptibility to erosion and dust production increases. In contrast, the most im...

An Experimental Assessment of the 2D Visibility Complex

We make an experimental assessment of the size of the 2D visibility complex of disjoint unit discs randomly distributed in the plane with density μ. We observe that the number of free bitangents is asymptotically linear in the number of discs and we study the dependence of the linear asymptote in terms of the density of the scene. Specifically, for a particular range of scene densities μ, we ex...

We describe a method of producing ray-traced images of 2D environments at interactive rates. The 2D environment consists of a set of disjoint, convex polygons.
